MOOD GROUP

If you are 13-17 years and experiencing symptoms of depression (e.g. sadness, bouts of crying, irritability, trouble sleeping, decreased interest in activities, trouble concentrating) then this group may be a good fit for you.  The group will help you gain the skills needed to cope with mood-related issues in everyday life.  You will learn how to recognize your emotions (including the physical sensations and behaviours associated with the emotions), learn coping strategies and how to problem-solve in everyday situations, identify the negative thoughts that cause the feelings, challenge those negative thoughts and increase self-confidence.

Date: Mondays  at 4:30 – 5:30

Length: 12 Sessions with the opportunity for monthly follow-up sessions

ANXIETY GROUPS

Coping Cat: For children 7-13 years who experiences anxiety and are having difficulty coping.  The Coping Cat Anxiety Group will help you recognize signs of unwanted anxious feelings and reduce these feelings by understanding the thoughts behind them, by challenging these thoughts, learning relaxation strategies and practicing how to cope with situations that cause anxiety. Parents are invited to attend two individual sessions throughout the group to provide the therapist with additional information about the child and to learn strategies that they can implement at home.  The program was developed by Dr. P. Kendall and Dr. K. Hedtke.

Date: Wednesdays  at 4:00 – 5:00

Length: 16 Sessions

Social Anxiety: Does the thought of a gathering with friends create more worry than excitement for you?  If so, this group may be helpful.  The group is for youth 13-17 who struggle with anxiety specific to social situations.  It will help you understand the thoughts, feelings and behaviours related to your difficulty in social situations and teach you how to effectively cope with social situations without excessive and debilitating emotional and physical symptoms by challenging the thoughts, learning how to problem-solve and learning ways to relax.  You will also have the opportunity to practice the skills you learn through gradual exposure to social situations that cause anxiety.

Date: Wednesdays at 5:30 – 6:30

Length: 12 Sessions with the opportunity for monthly follow-up sessions

** Please note that if there is interest in a child or youth group that is not currently running due to scheduling issues or low registration numbers, many of the above programs can be offered on an individual basis.
